Arnold Heemink is since 1993 full professor Mathematical Physics at the department of Applied Mathematics (DIAM) of the University of Technology Delft.
He has developed for more than 25 years data assimilation and inverse modelling techniques for large-scale numerical models. These techniques are often based on Kalman filtering or on the (model reduced) adjoint method. In the early nineties, when Arnold Heemink was affiliated to Rijkswaterstaat, the main applications were flow and transport problems in coastal seas.
The data assimilation scheme for the operational storm surge forecasting system in the Netherlands is one of the highlights of this research. More recently he also worked on real life data assimilation problems in air pollution and reservoir engineering.
